GFC lose ‘Faz’ on a frustrating day

GLOOM was etched on Tony Vance’s face after he witnessed his Green Lions succumb to a 3-1 defeat at Herne Bay on Saturday.

Virtually every sentence the Guernsey FC manager spoke in his post-match interview included the word ‘frustrating’ after the hosts won thanks to a first-half strike from Bradley Steventon and two second-half penalties converted by Zac Ansah.

Substitute Robbie Legg had reduced the arrears to 2-1 at one stage, but all in all it was a bad day at the office for GFC.

‘First 10 minutes we started really strongly, Ross should have scored, and then – football can do this to you – they go up the other end and score a goal, which is really frustrating,’ Vance told GFC TV.

‘Then it gets messy, which is perfect for them because they were just launching it, to be honest, at times they were launching it with quality and it’s difficult. We couldn’t get a strangle hold on the game.

‘The only time we looked a bit better was second half at 2-0 where we were pushing.’

To make matters worse, Will Fazakerley dislocated his shoulder in the first half and Kieran Mahon also went off injured.

‘We have played nine league games so far, only one at home, and we’ve lost only two games so it’s not all doom and gloom, but my concern is we’ve lost two on the bounce now,’ said Vance, counting the FA Trophy defeat at Barking.

‘We’ve lost a game here where you look at us and, I think, pound-for-pound we should be getting something from the game. That’s not taking anything away from them, they did well at what they’re good at and what they’re asked to do, but it’s a game we should’ve done better in and that’s the frustration.

‘The real issue is we’re now missing Jamie Dodd, we lost Will Fazakerley today, we haven’t got Tom Dodds and it looks like we might have lost Kieran Mahon as well – that’s four massive players, big competitors, for us and someone’s got to fill those boots.’
