Improving Guernsey face a step up in level

GUERNSEY hope a home crowd will provide an edge as they welcome the ‘oldest hockey club in the world’ to Footes Lane tomorrow in the Investec Women’s Tier Two Championship.

Two-and-a-half years ago David Wray’s side visited Teddington in what was then the Women’s EH Trophy, slipping to a 2-0 defeat in a closely-fought contest.

They are now looking forward to the return match that has been thrown up by the draw and are looking to gain some revenge for that defeat – but the coach admits that it will not be easy.

‘When you play a team from South Division One you know they will be a good side,’ Wray said.

‘Our last opponents, Lewes, play in South Division Three, so this is obviously going to be a step up from that and we went out to them a couple of years ago, but it was a close game.

‘We hope to get a good crowd at home as it makes a big difference to the team.’

Against Lewes last month Guernsey weathered an early storm before reaping the benefits of some tactical changes to win impressively 5-2.

Guernsey Ladies against Teddington starts at noon on Saturday at Footes Lane and will be followed by Guernsey Men's Seconds against London Edwardians in the EH Tier Three Championship at 2pm.

Guernsey Men's Firsts are in England to face Reading Seconds in the Tier Two Championship.
