The Guernsey star displayed the confidence gained by her fine run to the semi-finals at the Hobart International last week to come-from-behind and beat higher-ranked Kristyna Pliskova 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in Melbourne today.
The Sarnian said that last week's tournament – and growing up in the island – helped her to cope with the windy conditions that confronted the players today.
'I don't mind the wind and with the way I play – a lot of slice, drops shots, change-of-pace balls – I think it works well. And I'm patient,' she said.
In the second round Watson will face 16th seed Elise Mertens, the Belgian player she beat for the first time last week in Tasmania.
