Is island tour the answer to GFC's home form?

TONY VANCE has come up with a novel way for his Green Lions to replicate their terrific away form on home soil.

Back-to-back victories in the space of four days on the road – 1-0 at VCD Athletic last weekend and 2-0 at Three Bridges on Tuesday – have lifted Guernsey FC to eighth in the table and they have the second best away record in Isthmian South-East.

But now they face three successive games at Footes Lane, where they have not won in their last seven outings.

‘For Saturday, we’ve said we are going to park at the airport first thing in the morning, get a coach to drive us all around the island, have breakfast somewhere like the Imperial and then coach it to Footes Lane – treat it as an away game,’ said the GFC manager, trying to explain the stark difference in home and away form.

‘With the squad situation and ultimately on the back of a poor run for us, we have managed to pick momentum up again in the last two games when really the odds were stacked against us.

‘Credit has to go to all the lads. They were two different types of performances, but ones that were required given the circumstances of both games and the camaraderie that has been developed from it is excellent.

‘There is a bit of unfortunate pressure that comes from playing at home, but we want to keep this momentum so we need the crowd to understand that they can play a huge part of it in supporting us.’

Vance also had special praise for Steve Renouf, who scored his first GFC goal at Three Bridges.

‘In the last few games Steve has got on and done well on each occasion and it was fantastic for him to seal victory with a very well-taken goal.

‘I’ve got a lot of respect for the likes of him, Tyler McKane, Louis Graham and Glenn Le Tissier, who have put the hard yards in trying to get that sort of opportunity.’
