Green Lions wait patiently as rivals return to action

TEN days ago – only – it seemed a ridiculous thought. Guernsey FC reaching the play-offs, that is.

But those three wins on the bounce in the space of week, coupled by win-able home games to come against Haywards Heath Town and Chichester City in the coming days has injected new excitement into the Green Lions’ campaign.

Ross Allen could be back in the GFC starting side as Haywards Heath Town arrive tomorrow, 24 hours after an almost complete Isthmian South East programme tonight.

For Tony Vance and GFC fans there will be more than a passing interest in the games at Herne Bay, Cray Valley and Burgess Hill.

Sixth-placed Whyteleafe, one point ahead of GFC, are away at Burgess Hill Town, while fifth-placed Herne Bay should win at home to struggling Ramsgate.

Cray Valley, who are seven points clear of the Green Lions, face fellow play-off hopefuls and very much in-form Whitehawk.

Regardless of those outcomes, though, Vance’s men surely have to win both these next home matches and they should not be afraid of the ‘Heath’, who slipped to their third defeat in which they have failed to score last time out.

They have also lost midfielder Lloyd Cotton, who looks set for a spell on the sidelines.

Heath’s main man is striker Trevor McCreadie, who sits joint sixth in the divisional scorers list with 11 goals, one more than Allen.

GFC won the corresponding match last season 2-1 13 months ago and also grabbed a draw at Heath back in September.

Heath may be 10 points adrift of GFC and lie down in 15th spot, but it is worth bearing in mind that they have played five fewer games than our boys, their tally of 19 games being the joint lowest in the division.
