Lesley and Nicolle rip up their PBs

THE fleet-of-foot Sam Lesley outshone Carl Holden and his staying power in the Guernsey Athletics Club road series opener over five miles, writes Jamie Ingrouille.

Together with unknown quantity Will Bodkin bringing his dated sub-16min. 5,000m best to the start-line picture at Rocque Balan and taking a short-lived lead, Lesley had more than the near-constant headwind to worry about.

But Lesley reached North Beach in a personal best of 28min. 17sec., pulling away from last year’s winner Holden throughout. Holden clocked 29-00 with the improving Nick Mann a close third.

‘I’ve had a few seconds and thirds now, but this is the first one I’ve won,’ said Lesley.

‘It was a PB for me by about 30 seconds and my PB was in ideal conditions, so I’m really happy with the time.’

Top woman Mel Nicolle, who beat Rosie Williams and Nicole Petit, gladly overwrote her six-year-old PB with 33-24.

‘It felt like the perfect start to the road season,’ she said.

‘I have a few personal bests that are six years old and the plan this year was to beat them all.’
