Glover gives Green Lions a helping hand

GUERNSEY FC played their get-out-of-jail-free card last night at Footes Lane.

That card was kindly dealt to them by unfortunate Haywards Heath Town goalkeeper Luke Glover.

With the home side trailing 2-1 and having been unable to test Glover throughout the previous 83 minutes, he produced the epitome of a howler as he somehow managed to make a complete hash of Seb Skillen’s low cross in from the right and fumble it into his own goal – quite literally giving the Green Lions a helping hand when they desperately needed it.

The 2-2 draw saw Tony Vance’s men regain seventh position in the Isthmian South-East table.

The GFC manager was not hiding from the fact his side got lucky, but he added that they earned some luck.

‘I say to the players time and time again, you’ve got to keep knocking on the door and eventually something will go in or eventually will be let in and we got a little bit lucky with that one when the door opened for us,’ Vance said.

Signs were ominous for the hosts from as early as the third minute of the game when Trevor McCreadie rifled a drive into the top corner after GFC had failed to clear their lines despite having ample opportunity to do so.

Ross Allen equalised just eight minutes later from GFC’s one attempt of note of the first half, but the visitors led at the break thanks to Ryan Warwick’s goal.

‘First half we didn’t turn up ... second half, credit to the players, they came out fighting and got lucky in the end,’ said Vance who was also full of praise for the performance of centre-back Tom Strawbridge, who was an easy choice as man of the match.
