Druce excited about seeing his 200m record going
JOE CHADWICK’S 200m excellence at the indoor England U20 Championships has ignited the prospect of him challenging or even beating Tom Druce’s Guernsey record as early as this summer.
Chadwick stormed to a 21.83sec. clocking for the runner-up spot in his semi-final at EIS Sheffield before placing just outside the podium in the final.
That rapid preliminary run left Druce, who set the current 200m mark of 21.32 on a more favourable outdoor track, even more aware of the 18-year-old’s great potential.
The popular IAAF points tables equate Chadwick’s run to an outdoors 21.39 and Druce feels that such times – or of course faster – could arrive in the near future.
‘Joe was brilliant – exciting times ahead,’ said Druce.
‘He finished so strongly, coming back at the guy [who won the semi], so it’s really quite promising going forward.
‘Hopefully he can get in that range this summer and if he does not, I am sure he will for 2021, which will be great.’
He also noted that the Millfield School-based Chadwick has been without an outdoor track recently, limiting him to a once-weekly session in Yeovil and around 30m of indoor space at his current base.
‘All credit to him for managing to do those under far from perfect circumstances,’ added Druce.
Bath University student Abi Galpin faced some strange circumstances over 60m at the senior British Championships at Emirates Arena, Glasgow.
She finished fifth in her heat but ended slightly off-pace with 7.92 as, unusually, suspicions were raised about the accuracy of the timing and the uncharacteristically slow reaction times.
Meanwhile, Idaho State University’s Indi Gallagher claimed a solid win over her favoured 400m distance.
She improved her season’s best to 58.16 at the Big Sky Tuner meet in Montana.
