Sheppard’s heroics not enough for Guernsey

TOBY RITZEMA was Jersey’s two-goal star but in goalkeeper Seb Sheppard Guernsey had the unofficial man of the match at Footes Lane yesterday.

Jersey were full value for their third U18s win in five years and but for the Sylvans keeper it would have been a rout rather than the 3-0 it ended up.

Both coaches had spoken beforehand about team ethic and sheer hard work to get them through although, secretly, a confident Jersey coach Paul Renton will have been aware that his group have enjoyed the upper hand on their age-group adversaries in recent times.

Guernsey’s starting side was drawn from just two clubs, seven Saints and four Sylvans, but how they could have done with an eighth Saint now at Bristol City.

Jersey had the edge physically and in Alex Scott’s absence possessed all the flair players on show, not least Ritzema, Kushal Frankson, Rai Dos Santos and the cultured left-back James Carr.

Dos Santos it was who scored Jersey's third goal.
