Isthmian League chairman: ‘Correct decision was made’ on postponement

PRIVATELY Guernsey FC officials were distinctly unamused at Burgess Hill’s failure to come to the island last weekend.

But perhaps that collective biting-of-the-tongue has to do with knowing that they should not push their luck when it came to publicly criticising a rival team when, still, there are some who would rather see the back of the Green Lions, or any offshore team for that matter.

Meanwhile, the Isthmian League chairman has said calling off the game because of flight delays and uncertainty over return flights was the right decision and that utilising a local official on the line would not have been a good idea.

‘The referee would have then been a first-year level four, which it was felt was not fair on him or the players,’ Nick Robinson told BBC Radio Guernsey.

‘I think the clubs between themselves agreed that the match should not take place,’ although that comment does not add up to director Nic Legg’s version of events.

‘Burgess Hill, from their point of view, knew they would have to come over midweek and they took that decision,’ added Robinson.

‘I think it was supported by Guernsey FC, certainly so far as the office is concerned, we were of the belief that everybody was satisfied.’

The Burgess Hill supporters already on island have not kicked up much, if any, fuss and were determined to have a good time.

One top local referee, who asked to go un-named, was surprised that Burgess did not take up the offer of a local ref running the line.

But Robinson was not supporting that argument.

‘Have they done matches at that level? Are they used to the intensity of the game at that level?

‘I think that everybody has to consider safety of the players, and from the referee’s point of view what would it do to him if he made some mistakes?’
