Football season left in tatters
FOR just the third time in 125 years of competitive Island football, the game has been put on hold.
The First World War took out five seasons, the Second World War another seven. As of now, nobody knows if the current season will ever be restored or it may be just a case of skipping forward into the 2020-21 campaign.
Today should see confirmation that next week’s Muratti Vase semi-final in Alderney is off – although it is understood that decision has already been made – and because of the knock-on effects of that, it is quite unlikely the final in Jersey on 16 May goes ahead.
Alderney player-spokesman Steve Concanen said cancellation was ‘common sense’.
‘To be honest, the season is probably over,’ he added.
The domestic league programme was officially suspended on Saturday lunchtime, hours after North had beaten Alderney to stretch their lead at the top of the FNB Priaulx league to 10 points.
Only a dramatic collapse will stop the North winning the title, but the question now is whether they will get the chance to confirm it?
Also, will Alderney be allowed to fly in again for their remaining games? If not, what happens to their results? Will the season be declared null and void?
More on that situation may be known after an emergency meeting this evening.
‘It is imperative that your Club is represented at this meeting,’ said the GFLM when they released the following statement:
‘The GFLM board has just met and following the Director of Public Health’s media release recommending social distancing, and the recommendation of the GFA for the GFLM and clubs to consider suspending all local football, the board has decided to suspend all league matches across all age groups with immediate effect, and until further notice.’
