Another packed day of snooker at the North Social Club saw 32 entrants battle it out in the unseeded, straight tournament, with Shorto beating Glenn Le Prevost 3-0 in the final.

It’s the third such disappointment for Le Prevost, who has yet to get his hands on the trophy, but he came up against an inspired Island captain.

Shorto had already made a 49 in the event and he powered to his sixth title with breaks of 65 and 50.

Both players had met Premier Division opposition throughout their progress, with Shorto’s toughest encounter being the semi-final.

It was the only time he would drop a frame in beating Darren Hughes 2-1, but it was Le Prevost who had the tougher draw.

An opening round match against Martyn Desperques does not come much harder, but having won 2-1 and then survived a decider against Kelvin Du Feu, he booked his final place with a 2-0 victory against John Skillett in the semis.

Skillett did take the highest break prize, though, with a fine 74, but the day belonged to Shorto.

He has now won the Open more than anyone else, with Desperques stuck on five titles.
