Cam eyes a Games double

CAM CHALMERS remains hopeful of completing a home Island Games and Olympics double in 2021.

But the confirmation of new dates of 23 July to 8 August 2021 for the next Olympic Games, still branded Tokyo 2020 despite taking place a year later than planned, has complicated his plans somewhat.

Chalmers will be expected to attend a holding camp for around a fortnight beforehand and with the Guernsey 2021 NatWest International Island Games unfolding from 3-9 July, things look, as he puts it, ‘tight’.

Feasible? Perhaps – and it seems that time will tell.

‘As soon as they released the dates, that was one of the first things I thought of,’ said Chalmers.

‘It’s going to be a bit of a tight one and it depends, obviously – first things first, I’ve got to qualify and make the Great Britain team.’

Chalmers remains somewhat hopeful given that the men’s 400m races will, provisionally, take place within the first few days of the Guernsey 2021 programme.

‘I’ve got to see what the dates are but I’ve got a good feeling that I will be able to compete at the Island Games.

‘I think it’s just enough time that the team will fly out the following week, so fingers crossed.

‘If I’m around, I want to run as much as I can. If it works and if the time frame allows, I’ll do it all.’

Younger brother Alastair, meanwhile, finds himself balancing his ambitions for the Island Games, European Under-23s and Olympics – all starting in July.

The Euro U23s start on 8 July and therefore overlap with the Island Games.

Guernsey Athletics development officer Tom Druce suspects that British Athletics will not support his bid to compete at both.

But much remains to be settled and indeed, Druce feels that making the Olympics could allow the 20-year-old to instead focus on Guernsey and Tokyo.

‘If he qualifies for the Olympics, ironically, that might gave him a chance of doing the Island Games,’ he said.

‘We will see.’
