Gauvain still targeting pro career

CHARLTON GAUVAIN won’t have to undergo surgery on his damaged knee and is still targeting a professional playing career off island.

Fears that the Guernsey FC forward would require a knee operation after injuring himself against Whitehawk in early January have now been dispelled and, until the island-wide lockdown, he was back in training under the eagle-eye of Colin Fallaize.

Good news is in short supply these weeks but to the background of a football season put on hold and, most likely, never to be completed, Gauvain’s recovery fits that bill.

There may not be a 2020 Muratti cap to win, but Gauvain is putting in the mileage in his permitted daily exercise allowance and still harbours hopes of a professional career.

‘I just want to get fully fit and go somewhere next season,’ he said yesterday.

‘Hopefully, I will get scouted again,’ added the player who a year ago was spending time at Bristol City.

He blames himself for the poor tackle which saw him strain his medial cruciate, bruise the bone and effectively end his season four months early.

While GFC team-mates Kieran Mahon and Paris Pereira underwent surgery for more serious ACL knee damage, a scan at the end of February painted a brighter picture for the youngster with one senior Muratti cap to date.

Once given the all-clear he has been putting himself through gym sessions designed for him by physio Dan Guillemette and GFC assistant coach Fallaize, who was also working him hard on the training pitch before the lockdown.

But he is itching to get playing again now he is free of pain.

‘I get bored watching,’ he said.
