Big names sign up for inter-insular virtual relays
GUERNSEY runners will toe the imaginary start line with strong Jersey competition in a virtual racing double-bill spanning Thursday to Sunday.
Olympian Lee Merrien, who headed Guernsey’s campaign in the recent Virtual National Road Relays, is the island’s big name for an event where competitors tackle separate solo time-trials over one and five miles.
But the 40-plus entry features several established endurance stars as well as various up-and-coming youngsters.
Several Jersey competitors are also on the list and Island Games 5,000m champion Elliott Dorey is among them, although he has currently committed to the mile only.
Athletes must complete their one-mile time-trial on Thursday or Friday, with Saturday or Sunday reserved for the five-miler, and then submit their times from an activity tracker.
The top six one-mile and top four five-mile times from each island will contribute to an inter-insular ‘relay’ championship.
GAC endurance director Louise Perrio is excited to host such a competitive-looking event, which complies fully with the States of Guernsey’s coronavirus guidelines.
‘It is pleasing to see such a broad spectrum, both in age and ability, of the training group engaging with the new parameters constructively and positively, and with the challenge of training whilst observing the full social distancing requirements,’ she said.
‘Virtual fitness testing encourages athletes to maintain focus and motivation in the short term during these unusual circumstances, which in turn contributes to physical and mental health and well-being by providing impetus to maintain an exercise routine within the constraints allowed and to be creative in doing so.
‘Whilst virtual testing is a good objective for an athlete, the ethos is not, either locally and nationally, win at all costs – respect for the current situation and other members of the public is paramount.’
