Place your order – Tri Club set up unique race

GUERNSEY Triathlon Club have devised a clever plan for a virtual sprint-distance race this weekend that encompasses all three disciplines while still adhering to States coronavirus guidelines.

Following the success of their Lockdown Duathlon, the organisers look to host a three-day Weekend Sprint Triathlon spanning Friday to Sunday, likely as part of a longer series.

Competitors must undertake a time-trial in each discipline – a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run – at a rate of one event per day.

The bike leg can be performed on the road or via Zwift, although organisers are urging road users to prioritise safety, and competitors can choose the order of the three disciplines.

Joint-organiser Emily Squire is excited to build on the success of their last event while still complying with States guidance limiting people to one form of outdoors exercise per day.

‘We realised that we could not have it all in one day,’ said Squire.

‘We looked at a one-a-day idea where everybody could compete and we collect the individual times and keep a spreadsheet... it will be a nice bit of proper competition.

‘We are encouraging people to go on the road, even if we don’t want them to race, and it means we can open it to the whole club, so it can be more of a community event.’

Squire is also welcoming non club members and hopes to see as many participants as possible.

The decision to allow competitors to choose the order of their disciplines, she says, has been made on the grounds of safety.

‘We want people to swim when it’s safe. If people can’t swim on Friday when the sea is rough but they want to go for the run, we’d prefer for them to be able to choose.’
