While the rest of the Guernsey contingent failed to match the times clocked at the previous week’s virtual inter-insular, Bodkin continued his impressive comeback with a 4min. 23sec. solo run.

This is the fastest road mile posted by a Sarnian since 1992 when Gary Broster stormed along the Vazon straight in 4-16, boosted by a rather substantial tailwind.

But Bodkin, who was merely months old back then, had no such assistance as he tackled a self-devised five-lap road course near his home, improving 7sec. on his time from the previous week.

‘It was great – I just enjoyed it and I’m enjoying running well again,’ said the delighted runner.

‘Psychologically, it can be quite tough when you can see a mile in front of you.

‘[My route] feels like running on an indoor track and there were some tight bends, but I just find it mentally a bit easier.’

The Guernsey 2021 NatWest International Island Games are forming a potent objective, with Bodkin among the key names who have re-emerged recently following several low years.

But is Bodkin seeking a Games berth? The past 1500m/5000m star remains unsure.

‘I will see to be honest – if I am running well, running for Guernsey in the Games will be great. I just enjoy running at the moment,’ he added.

With several athletes dropping out at late notice, Isaac Powers’ 5-02 made him the second quickest Sarnian.

Summer Woodhead was the quickest Guernseywoman with 5-20.

Lee Merrien is Guernsey’s fastest ever track miler, having run 3min. 59.18sec. at Crystal Palace in 2005.
