An isolated GFC wouldn’t face boot

GUERNSEY FC are very confident they will not be kicked out of the Isthmian South-East League if they are unable to fulfil fixtures due to travel restrictions.

Meanwhile, the Isthmian League’s scheduled start date of Saturday 19 September is now open to doubt.

Green Lions club chairman Mark Le Tissier was part of the league’s annual meeting held by Zoom last weekend, an online meeting which recognised that with government recommendations and guidelines changing on a regular basis the scheduled start date may be just perhaps a tad ambitious.

And while the Isthmian await further advice from the FA and government, Le Tissier has requested a meeting with the States of Guernsey to discuss the situation regarding UK teams coming to the island and vice versa.

‘We want to work with the team at Health and see if it is feasible. But at this stage things are fluid,’ said Le Tissier, while highlighting that his club’s outlook has not changed.

‘We want to continue to keep our club and the community safe. We won’t be taking any chances.’

Le Tissier said that the Isthmian have recognised that if the season faces too long a delay that it may have to change the format, but whatever is concluded by the top brass GFC will not have to seek the use of UK-based players and play all their games on the mainland should they be precluded from travelling.

Although it is understood GFC were perhaps prepared to go down that route to preserve their hard-earned Isthmian status, Le Tissier does not believe it is necessary.

‘We haven’t had any discussions within the club as we don’t feel that [route] is feasible really. But we have liaised with the league, who have told us we will not be prejudiced by Covid. I am confident we won’t be expelled if the worst-case scenario happens.’
