Another sure sign that the Guernsey FC campaign has been cut down by Covid even before it started came with yesterday’s confirmation that the Green Lions captain had signed for his old club and immediately given a fresh injection into their highly-promising start to the FNB Priaulx League season.
Dodd will play for GFC in the Skipton Cup game against FC Isle of Man this Saturday evening and then divert his attention to Saints’ attempt to win a 15th title and second in succession if you disallow the voided 2019-20 season.
Leon Meakin, the Saints coach, is happy to welcome back the island’s best central defender, having known the news was coming as far back as 10 days ago.
‘He signed Monday,’ said the coach who is targeting a fourth straight win at home to Alderney on Friday evening.
As to whether Dodd had signed having realised there would not be an English campaign to play, the Saints coach added: ‘I believe so, but you would have to ask him or the GFC people.’
Meakin added: ‘He wants to play football and as things stand around the world things are looking quite bleak.’
In terms of finding room for another player in an already bulging squad, Meakin said it was a good problem to have.
‘When someone like that makes himself available you have to say yes. Every club in the island would welcome him with open arms.’
