‘Dom’s still the best’

SAINTS will win tomorrow’s ‘big one’ at Port Soif and Guernsey’s best non-GFC striker – Dom Heaume – will get the winner.

Still No 1: Dom Heaume

Both verdicts come from the mouth of Alderney’s old soldier Steve Concanen who, 16 years after playing for the greens in the Muratti final at Springfield, returns with the Ridunians for another FNB Priaulx League double-header tonight and tomorrow.

Concanen has played against all Guernsey’s top strikers in recent seasons and behind the still standout Ross Allen, he said the island remains blessed for choice when it comes to ‘9s’.

Alderney would have to have a Dom Heaume, Sam Murray or Kyle Smith, said Concanen, who plays against Bels at The Track this evening and Sylvans at St Peter’s tomorrow.

‘Dom’s always a handful, Kyle scores goals and “Muzza” is also a handful and scores goals,’ the 35-year-old veteran said.

But as for the best, he has no doubt. ‘I’d say Dom. It’s the way he keeps the ball. He just knows how to play the game. But if it was me [picking the Guernsey Muratti team] I’d play two up front.’

Pushed on the question as to who will come out top in tomorrow’s big St Martin’s-Rovers clash at Port Soif, Concanen, who will again start in midfield at the Track to provide the bite lacking with the absence of Jermaine Parry, still plagued by a shoulder issue, plumped for his old club.

‘I’d go for Saints and Dom to get the winner,’ he laughed.

Kick-off at Port Soif tomorrow is 2pm, tonight at the Track 8pm.
