Brave College come up against a yellow-brick wall

AND just like that, Colombians are within striking distance of top spot.

When Zak Damarell woke up last Wednesday morning, his side were eight points adrift of runaway Men’s Division One leaders Indies.

Four days, two important wins and six points later, he was contemplating leapfrogging their big rivals this coming Saturday when they meet for the second time this season.

Admittedly, Indies have not played in that time and they now have a game in hand on Colombians, but the chasers are playing with far more determination than they were when they succumbed 6-1 to Tom Still’s side in October so should provide more of a challenge to the oranges.

Colombians will, though, have to improve on their latest performance – a 2-0 win over Elizabeth College.

It was workmanlike and it got the job done, but EC were the better side throughout the second half and Colombians had goalkeeper Jake Le Marchant to thank for an excellent penalty save seven minutes from time that ensured the final few minutes were more comfortable than they deserved to be.

The two-goal cushion had long been established by that stage, with both strikes coming in the opening quarter of a match played in glorious November sunshine. Jack Curran and Damarell were the scorers.
