KGV no appeal for one coach

MANZUR coach Mark Romeril says moving quarter-final ties to the KGV 3G devalues the competition.

Heavy rain yesterday and more expected today means three of this weekend’s four scheduled last-eight ties are likely to be moved to the artificial surface.

But Romeril, whose Manzur side is playing as well as anyone in the FNB Priaulx League at present and would probably start favourites against North tonight, is unhappy about the prospect of moving from the grass.

‘For me it [a quarter-final] is a spectacle game and should be played on the grass.

‘KGV serves a purpose but not for certain games. It should be played at Northfield.’

Romeril, who sees KGV as more of a training facility, says the GFLM committee need to ‘think about these things a little more’.

And, in his opinion, if Northfield under the lights is not playable tonight then they should wait and play there when it is playable.

In contrast, Sylvans coach Martyn de Garis is quite content if his side’s home game against Belgraves is moved to the caged pitch.

‘We don’t mind playing at KGV,’ he said in expectation that St Peter’s would be deemed unfit.

Although his side are going well in the league and have become real title contenders, de Garis is just as focused on the cup.

‘Every game is important to us. We want to try and win some silverware. We’ve got good momentum and don’t want to stop.’
