The distance runner and multiple Guernsey record-holder last night became the 22nd islander to be inducted to the Sporting Heroes hall of fame and a packed Beau Sejour theatre not only witnessed the induction of the now officially retired 40-year-old athlete, but speak at length about his career in an entertaining question and answer session with host Tony Curr.

On a hugely successful night for Merrien’s chosen sport, 400m hurdler Ala Chalmers, perhaps a future GB Olympian himself, was present to receive the Richard Burton Salver for the outstanding individual performance by a Guernseyman in a pandemic-hit 2020.

In addition, the corresponding female award - the Guernsey Brewery Trophy - went to outstanding young sprinter Abi Galpin.
