Tom Still’s men are now 10 wins from 10 games played and have extended their lead at the top thanks to two goals apiece from Josh Kendal and Steve Waldrom, which saw them edge a seven-goal thriller 4-3 as top-flight action returned to Footes Lane following the Christmas break.

Guernsey was apparently the only venue in the British Isles that could boast competitive hockey on Saturday and, with the coronavirus pandemic preventing many of the island’s students from returning to their universities, in its way Covid-19 actually added to the quality on show.

Even before the leaders started their first match of 2021, they knew they had a real contest on their hands despite playing against a side who have registered a solitary victory so far this campaign because this time out Yobbos could call upon the likes of the Thompson brothers, both Stokes brothers, Tom Cashin and Ross Guilbert to bolster their ranks considerably.

The pink-and-whites played like a side with plenty of confidence as well and there was no let-up from either team throughout the 70 high-octane minutes that warmed up a chilly afternoon.

Indies never trailed, but three times Matt Stokes drew Yobbos level before Waldrom struck the decisive goal in the second half.

Earlier Casuals had beaten Elizabeth College 4-2 in another good game while in the Alliance Women’s League, Amazons maintained their unbeaten run with a 7-1 victory over Indies Ladies while Puffins edged out Panthers by the odd-goal in three.
