Pembroke to North Beach race is first postponed

SUNDAY’S planned road 10km has become the first official victim of a racing programme suspension prompted by lockdown 2.0.

Guernsey Athletics is suspending all organised activity until further notice over Covid concerns, though the annual Pembroke to North Beach 10km is the only confirmed postponement as of yet.

It adds to the unfortunate run of an event that last year, very unusually for a road race, had to be staged later than planned after falling foul of the weather initially.

Next up during this quiet patch in the club racing calendar is the Imperial 10-miler set for 28 February, which, as with all coming fixtures, will be subject to review.

‘As in 2020, the club will move quickly in line with guidance from the States of Guernsey to re-introduce athletics to our members as soon as it is safe to do so,’ Guernsey Athletics wrote in a statement.

‘This will no doubt be in a phased manner.’

Meanwhile, the club has been considering virtual racing to allow a safe alternative to conventional competition.

But it will not be utilising the now-vacant 10km date and will instead review the situation regularly to see if and when it is appropriate to stage virtual events.
