LISTEN: Guernsey men's hockey coach Andy Good on the GP Sport Podcast
GUERNSEY men's hockey team coach Andy Good has emphasised the importance of giving youth a chance at the highest level.
Speaking on the latest Guernsey Press Sport Podcast, Good, who is also head of hockey at Elizabeth College, believes that it is far more beneficial to give younger players a taste of representative hockey rather than turn to the 'old guard' when opportunities arise.
'You have to make sure these younger players coming through get the chance, otherwise what's the point in doing any sort of junior development?,' Good said.
'That's very much where I'm coming from as a school teacher really. I want these young kids coming through into our senior teams as much as possible so they're getting the experience of playing at that level.'
Good added that the set-up at the Guernsey Hockey Club at Footes Lane is the 'ideal environment' for youngsters to play sport and develop their skills.
'My daughter is six now and I take her along on a Sunday morning, there's hundreds of kids down there, there's a nice family atmosphere, they do lots of little coaching games – it's just a great environment to be in.
'If there's anyone out there who is thinking about it, I would encourage them to get down there.
'There's very few places in the UK that have a set up like ours. In fact probably only the National League sides will have that kind of set up with a clubhouse, a pitch and a stand. We are just so lucky to have that.'
