LISTEN: Athletics in the spotlight on Guernsey Press Sport Podcast
ABI GALPIN is raring to return to the UK race scene as she chases Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games qualification.
The 20-year-old sprinter joined athletics development officer Tom Druce on the latest Guernsey Press Sport Podcast – out today – to discuss the budding track and field season.
Individually, after a purely local 2020 outdoors campaign, where she lowered the Guernsey women’s 200m record to 24.60sec., Galpin anticipates a return to off-island competition next month.
She is nervous and excited in equal measure about the prospect.

‘It’s going to be really exciting,’ the Bath University student said.
‘I think my first racing will be particularly nerve-wracking because, obviously, I haven’t raced people that I don’t know.
‘When you get to a track in England, you don’t know who you’re with, you don’t know what they’re going to do.’
Topping the agenda are the England U23s on 19 and 20 June, then the British Championships just a week later.
Galpin admitted that ‘it’s going to take a lot’ to hit the Commonwealth Games B standard of 24.30.
But? ‘My speed’s been looking good, recently, so hopefully we can keep that going and just put a perfect race together. That’s what I need.’
