Saints just one win away from the title

ST MARTIN’S can now wrap up the FNB Priaulx League title in just nine days’ time.

Rovers’ shock 1-0 home loss to struggling Vale Rec, combined with Saints’ grinding 2-0 Saturday evening success over Sylvans, means that Leon Meakin’s men now need just one more win from three remaining games to reclaim the title. In fact they officially would retain it, having last won in 2018-19, the last completed GFA season.

Next up for Saints are Belgraves, who are in their best form of the campaign, but the blue-and-whites will meet the leaders without their star man, Charlton Gauvain, whose ankle injury early on in the win over Northerners will likely mean his season has ended.

And given that the initial diagnosis points to ruptured or snapped ankle ligaments, it may even prevent the former Bristol City trialist’s preparations for Guernsey FC’s 2021-22 season.

Spectators heard a loud crack as Gauvain, desperate to keep the ball in play, went over awkwardly with nobody near him.

Bels say he will have an MRI scan later this week to determine the full damage.

Elsewhere, two Sam Heathcote goals trumped Ciaran Stretton’s strike as Rangers beat Alderney 2-1 at St Andrew’s to draw level on points with a Ridunians’ side in free-fall.

But the big scoreline of the day was that 1-0 win for Vale as they defended superbly all afternoon and Glenn Le Tissier scored the decisive goal late on from the penalty spot.

Congratulations also go to the Northerners and Sylvans youngsters who clinched the Ravenscroft U16s and U13s titles respectively at the weekend.
