Mixed day for Cam and relay squad
CAM CHALMERS got his first taste of UK opposition in 21 months and emerged with an individual victory at the Loughborough International.
The Olympic hopeful overcame blustery conditions and a nervy start – they were called back twice and he was awarded a yellow card – to win his so-called ‘battle of the nations’ over 400m in 46.38sec.
Though off his personal best, the man in Guernsey attire finished strongly to deny Loughborough’s own Alex Haydock-Wilson (46.74) and Wales’ Joe Brier (46.88) plus representatives from GB Juniors, England and Scotland.
However, Guernsey’s young 4x400m relay quartet missed the targeted Commonwealth Games ‘A’ standard.
Peter Curtis set Cam up to get Guernsey into second overall, which Alastair Chalmers carried through nicely.
Sam Wallbridge got them across the line in third – behind England and GB Juniors – and in an otherwise solid 3-13.50, not too far outside the required 3-12.00.
At Footes Lane, Abi Galpin got her season off to a flier with a wind-legal 24.60sec. over 200m, matching her Guernsey record.
Will Bodkin tackled windy conditions to clock a new 5,000m best of 15-27.57 in another domestic highlight.
