A just celebration after the brief aberration

GRIFFINS learnt their lesson of the previous week and emphatically put the record straight to clinch the Odey Wealth Weekend Championship title on Saturday.

When Nathan Le Tissier hit the winning boundary, bringing up his half-century in the process, at a damp KGV just before 4pm with the rain having been falling steadily for much of their run chase against Wanderers-Irregulars, it signalled to Tom Kirk’s side as much as to anyone that their solitary defeat of the campaign to Cobo seven days earlier in a weather-affected game had been just an aberration.

Griffins were the best side in the competition and, after five wins from six with the the fifth a comprehensive eight-wicket success with more than 18 overs to spare, the trophy proved it.

‘We should have got over the line last weekend, so that kind of put a doubt in everyone’s mind, but as soon as we took the first wicket today, everyone was on it,’ said captain Kirk.

‘Today was the best we have bowled for a while and to go out and bat properly – I think we showed today that that was what we have been doing all year and we have deserved it because we have won five.

‘We looked at the competition at the start of the season and we weren’t quite sure how we would go because we have a few lads at uni who obviously weren’t going to be back, but we have got the same players out every week, which has been one of the keys, and everyone has contributed whether it be with bat or ball.

‘Everyone has had to do their bit and it’s been a while since we have won this so everyone is delighted.’
