Mahon on the move to Northerners
SKIPPER Marc McGrath was first hero then villain as Belgrave Wanderers nervously went through 2-1 against Northerners in the Jeremie Cup on Saturday.
Whether it is into the last eight or last four will take some working out as the Guernsey Football Association and their Jersey FA counterparts take their time in deciding whether the two inter-insular club competitions are truly inter-island.
But, for now, Belgraves are not overly worried beyond the immediate ban McGrath will be hit with after he was sent off having earlier given his side the lead.
Consolation for Northerners, who were two down in quick time at the Track, is that their squad is soon to be bolstered by GFC midfielder Kez Mahon who is departing struggling Manzur.
At the Corbet Field, Vale Rec came from a goal down at half-time to beat Sylvans 3-1 in the other Jeremie tie.
Euan Melrose had shot Sylvans ahead, but on the hour mark Ethan Woodhead poked his effort through the keeper’s legs to level.
Three minutes later Woodhead added a second and a third Vale goal in six minutes arrived via a Glenn Le Tissier penalty.
In the weekend’s solitary FNB Priaulx League game a very young and weakened Rovers won 3-0 at St Andrew’s, all the goals coming in the second period.
Max Simpson-Cohen was again on target for Kevin Gillease’s side, as was defender Ben Le Tocq and young forward Ben Straker.
