Scott off the mark

ALEX SCOTT had the high of his first Bristol City goal dampened by the low of another agonising home defeat on Tuesday at a rain-soaked Ashton Gate.

The 18-year-old Guernseyman overcame missing a golden opportunity earlier in the piece to give the Robins the lead in the Championship match against Nottingham Forest on 39min. when he knocked in the rebound after Brice Samba had parried Nahki Wells’ shot.

The hosts still led by that solitary goal when Scott was substituted in the 78th minute, but two injury-time goals from Nottingham Forest substitute Lyle Taylor denied City what promised to be their first home win of the season.

The Robins have not won at Ashton Gate in the league since January and, due to the pandemic, their fans have not witnessed a home victory for over 600 days now.

Despite the disappointing nature of the defeat, manager Nigel Pearson agreed that Scott, who was awarded a joint team-high of 7/10 in the Bristol Live players ratings, had impressed during his time on the pitch.

‘He’s come a long way, he’s a very young lad and I’m pleased for him to score the goal after the one he missed but he’s a real talent,’ Pearson said.

‘What’s also important is that we don’t apply too much pressure on players like him or Han-Noah Massengo who are real talents that we have. We’ve got some really good things about where we are and the players that we have, the players coming through.

‘For them to be able to perform at home and in an environment that’s difficult in terms of results, for them to perform at the levels they do is very important and very encouraging.’

Coincidentally, another Channel Islander netted for Bristol’s other professional club on Tuesday as Brett Pitman scored for Rovers in their 1-1 draw at Colchester United.
