No regrets as GFC claim second win
GUERNSEY FC leapt above their opponents as well as two other clubs in the Isthmian South Central table on Saturday as they made it two wins from two at Footes Lane this season.
Northwood were sent to the bottom of the pile as they succumbed to goals from man-of-the-match Charlton Gauvain and captain Ross Allen as the Green Lions deservedly picked up three points.
Tony Vance admitted that he thought it might be one of those frustrating afternoons as his side dominated the opening quarter only to find visiting goalkeeper Daniel Purdue in top form, but the GFC boss was a satisfied man afterwards.
‘After about 15-20 minutes I was thinking “it’s not going to go in”, but we wanted to be on a high tempo and go at them and we thought they were there for the taking, particularly at home, so we wanted to get them out of sight by half-time,’ Vance said.
‘Luckily Charlton scored a good goal, the goalkeeper was out of position and he saw that, took his chance and we were deservedly 1-0 up.
‘Obviously it’s always going to be a little bit shaky – one long ball or one corner [from them] can undo all the work.
‘It was important to get the three points, particularly at home, otherwise we would have regretted that.
‘We saw the game out, which was good, and I was pleased with a lot of aspects, but I can certainly see that it is still early days for us and when we play against teams who are probably a higher stature in the league, then we are going to have to work a lot harder and take our chances.’
