GFC boss breaks out – wishes he hadn’t

A STOPPAGE time penalty denied the Green Lions three vital points and for the third home game in a row Guernsey FC let a visiting side off the hook.

Through a Ross Allen brace GFC led 2-0 at Footes Lane on Saturday only to concede twice in the last half hour and missed the chance to climb several spots in the Isthmian South-Central table.

GFC coach Tony Vance missed the first half due to Covid protocols and afterwards joked whether he might have been better staying at home.

‘It is frustrating really ...we nearly held on but we were dropping deeper and deeper and running out of bodies probably, and also running out of legs.

‘It is the harsh reality for us at the moment. We have had three games at home and been in winning positions in all three of them and got no points or just a point.

‘If we were fitter and stronger and maybe had a couple more bodies we might well have got six or nine points.’

Kez Mahon gave away the late, late penalty but after a sterling, all-action display, nobody was pointing the finger of blame at the midfielder, let alone his coach.

‘You try and get in there, biting at them, but they got that one lucky break,’ said the coach.

Vance had seen the equaliser coming.

‘It had looked like they were going to score and on the bench you try and close things up.’

As for his belated appearance on the touchline, Vance explained: ‘I wasn’t allowed out, but I got out at half time and had been watching it at home on the TV in isolation.

‘I got here [at 2-0 up] at half time and perhaps should have gone back because I changed the game didn’t I?’
