SEB PRIAULX has gone ‘from a boy to a man’ and become a true ‘world-class driver’ this year in winning the first-ever Porsche Carrera Cup North America championship.

Those are the words of proud father Andy, the multiple World Touring Cars champion, shortly before watching his son’s final race of a triple bill at Road Atlanta, which he won.

By then the 20-year-old Guernseyman had already sealed the title early after a fantastic series, and Andy speaks with authority when he highlights just how much of an achievement that is.

‘It has to be one of the toughest one-make championships in the world,’ the 47-year-old said.

‘It’s the proving ground for real talent.

‘All the cars are identical and Seb has come away to the USA with the Covid restrictions in Guernsey, kept off-island and stayed the entire year on his own in a hotel room.

‘To achieve what he has achieved has been unbelievable. It’s absolutely fantastic – I am so proud of him.’

Andy emphasised that, aside from Multimatic’s ongoing financial support, his son achieved what he did with no outside help.

He credited dealing with tough situations – and of course, consistent performances – as what makes the difference between a winner and a champion.

‘There’s a lot of brilliant drivers that win races, but there are very few champions.’

Andy admitted he expected a ‘good season’ following Seb’s victory in the series opener and the pace he showed in those early stages, but that did not blunt the excitement of his son’s championship triumph.

‘This year he has gone from a super talent to a world-class driver’.

Winning the series has qualified Priaulx jnr for a shoot-out against other national champions, with potential Supercup places on the line, but the family cannot yet confirm what Seb will be targeting next season.
