Chertsey punish GFC slip

THE news that the three teams below them in the Isthmian South Central table had also lost was scant consolation for the Green Lions as they departed for home on Saturday evening.

But, even allowing for that, another home setback, a self-inflicted 1-0 defeat by unbeaten Chertsey Town, leaves GFC too close to the bottom of the table for comfort.

Once again they deserved more for their efforts, but having defended so well against the wind for 45 minutes they were ineffective with it and gifted Bryan Taylor a second-half winner.

It mattered not that Chertsey, up to fourth with the win, ended the game with 10 men after a late dismissal.

Tony Vance, the GFC boss, was frustrated and forlorn at the final whistle.

‘It’s not a nice way to lose a game. The first half we were excellent, played to the game-plan and had them where we wanted them.

‘But the second half we were sloppy, we allowed them a little bit of momentum and then, of course, we gave away a disappointing goal.

‘I feel sorry for Ty (McKane) and he is gutted about it, but the simple fact is that we had just one shot on target in the second half. We did not do enough to trouble them with the conditions and as it happens they probably played the conditions better than we did.

‘It is another game that got away.’

Chertsey’s dangerman Jake Baxter was kept in check well by the home defence, which surprisingly included club skipper Jamie Dodd, who had replaced a UK stranded Frank Tobin.

GFC are back in action tomorrow with an away game at Marlow.
