Huffer helps GFC to a point at Tooting

GUERNSEY FC picked up a valuable point from their first game in five weeks on Saturday – helped by having a former Leeds United goalkeeper between the sticks.

Callum Stanton had been ruled out of the trip to Tooting & Mitcham United having sustained an injury in training in midweek and with the likes of Jordan Kelly and Josh Addison unavailable, too, GFC manager Tony Vance used his contacts to locate emergency cover in the form of Will Huffer.

The 23-year-old, who was most recently at Stalybridge Celtic in the Northern Premier League, was able to help the Green Lions out for one game before he is set to join a new club next week.

He was given the number 13 shirt by Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa in 2018-19 and even made one appearance in the Championship, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Bristol City. He also spent time on loan at Barnet.

Huffer has represented England at youth level up to U18, and has played in the Three Lions’ junior ranks alongside the likes of Premier League stars Joe Willock, Jay da Silva and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Huffer’s day got off to a disappointing start as he had to face a second-minute penalty, which was converted by Mark Waters, after Jacob Fallaize had committed a foul in the box on his return to the side.

But after that early setback, the understrength Green Lions showed great character and Fallaize more than made amends for his indiscretion by heading home a deserved equaliser just before the half-hour.

Both sides created further chances, but there were to be no more goals and it finished 1-1.
