Game's defining moments go against GFC

TRANSFER deadline day does not capture Tony Vance’s imagination in the way it does for a lot of football fans.

‘The transfer window is definitely open in our league,’ said the Guernsey FC manager yesterday with an air of resignation, after suffering a 1-0 defeat away to a Westfield side who had just four of their starting XI from Footes Lane in November re-opposing the Green Lions at the weekend.

‘It’s a hindrance to us,’ added Vance of the ability clubs in Isthmian South Central have to make changes to their playing personnel throughout the season.

Westfield’s match-winner on Saturday, Salhin Abubakar, was one of the new faces GFC were up against and he struck in the 32nd minute to consign GFC to back-to-back league defeats.

However, Vance was not displeased with his side’s performance.

‘In terms of the balance of play, we were more than competitive, but football can be pretty simple and it can be dictated by a couple of moments in the game,’ he said.

‘For their goal we started attacking but had not got full control of the ball, turnover of possession happened, we were out of position and they punished us.

‘Then we had a set-piece, which is well-documented with the players with everybody knowing their roles and responsibilities, but certain people turned off. The first part went to plan and we should have had a tap in, but two people were not where they should’ve been.

‘Even with all the analysis we do and all the conversations we have, we switched off at key moments defending and attacking and it has cost us points.’
