North reach Stranger Cup semis with goals to spare

NEEDING to win by six to pip St Martin’s for the Ross Gower Stranger Cup’s best losers spot in the semi-finals, Jose Alvarez’s Northerners thumped a weakened Rangers 9-0 on Saturday evening at the KGV 3G.

Saints’ 5-1 success over Vale Rec at the same venue on Friday evening had heaped the pressure on North to be at their most ruthless.

They certainly made a good start against a Rangers side shorn of their four cup-tied Island U18s, Chris Le Cheminant heading them in front after 14 minutes and, inside 60sec., Luke Mollet doubling their lead.

On 25min. Sam Murray got in on the act and he had struck the crossbar before Joe Alvarez completed the first half scoring from the spot.

Alvarez would go on to finish with a hat-trick, while Murray, Le Cheminant and Mollet all grabbed braces in a hungry and focused performance by the light blues.

In a game they had to win big, the Priaulx champions-elect Saints had been held to 1-1 at half-time, but by the finish goals from Dom Heaume, Danny Hale, Louis Hunter, Ollie Smith and an own goal had raised their hopes of qualifying for the last four.

  • In the FNB Priaulx League, Sylvans scored four times in 20 minutes in the first half on their way to a 4-2 victory over Alderney while Rovers beat Manzur 5-0 at Port Soif. More in Monday's Guernsey Press.
