Vance left bemused in defeat

TONY VANCE was left a frustrated man yesterday as Hanwell Town returned to the Isthmian South Central top three with a 4-1 win over Guernsey FC at Footes Lane.

Kieran Mahon’s well-taken goal in the 20th minute put the Green Lions ahead but the London Geordies replied with two goals from captain Harry Rush to take a 2-1 lead going into half-time.

Although the visitors created the better chances, there was still just the one goal between the sides going into the final quarter of the game when GFC had a huge penalty shout turned down after Ross Allen appeared to be brought down in the box.

To compound the home side’s misery, they conceded two late goals to substitutes Ogo Obi and Tomasz Siemienczuk as GFC committed men forward.

‘They are a good side, they came and did their job, dominated us to a certain degree in terms of their intensity in the first half and their physicality was better than ours,’ said GFC manager Vance.

‘They also won with the refereeing decisions and they’ve got that in their locker. That ultimately set the tone.

‘I was really disappointed with the second goal we conceded because that was something we’ve talked about and worked on and we let slip there, but I thought in the second half we changed the shape, matched them and we tried to join the same party that they were on.

‘Ultimately they had a lot of chances, but at 2-1 we were still in the game and then a stonewall penalty and the referee chose not to give it, so that added to my bemusement.

‘I will never say the referee’s cost you a game, but he certainly cost the momentum today – that was in favour of the opposition and stopping us because he didn’t control it.

‘He did not cost us the game, but [it was] really frustrating.’
