LISTEN: Culverwell determined to make his mark in 2022
Sam Culverwell is determined to finally get that long-desired individual result and make further headway in the tough world of professional cycling.
At the start of his third season in Trinity Racing colours, the 21-year-old took a break from his rigorous training and racing schedule to speak on the Guernsey Press Sport Podcast about his main goals in 2022.
These include potential appearances at the U23 Paris-Roubaix and Tour of Britain, together with being Guernsey’s lead road rider at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
After two seasons of heavy disruption from Covid, plus other injury and illness misfortunes, the overarching aim is clear.

‘I want to get some results in some big races, which I need to do to step up,’ he said.
Culverwell is set for a busy and exciting season with Trinity, who have taken on a particularly multi-national look this season, but he also carries great praise for his Guernsey teammates.
He looks forward to joining forces with Marc Cox, Seb Tremlett, James Roe and Mike Serafin in Birmingham.
‘Hugely strong – I couldn’t ask for better teammates really,’ he said.
After Tobyn Horton pushed seriously for that elusive Commonwealths medal before a devastating mechanical in the dying metres at Gold Coast, the Guernsey Press questioned Culverwell on how he sees his own hopes.
But given that this edition takes place a week after the Tour de France, he flagged up the possibility of racing against cyclists the calibre of Rohan Dennis, Caleb Ewan or, closer to home, Guernsey 2003 Island Games criterium champion and ‘Manx missile’ Mark Cavendish.
‘Those guys are just on another level, so it’s tricky to set a goal, but I think you’ve just got to go for it,’ he added.
‘You don’t know what’s going to happen. The race might split in your favour and you make that split and suddenly you’re up there with those guys, fighting it out.’
