Of the five junior players to make it through Sunday’s qualifiers into the last 16, just one remains and that is the island’s lowest handicap Ollie Chedhomme who is partnering the Guernsey men’s team captain Dave Jeffery.

They were relatively comfortable winners last night as they saw off the challenge of Island champion Danny Blondel and Sam Le Huray in 15 holes and will now take on Jeff Domaille and Garry McFarlane, who finished strongly to defeat Nigel Vaudin and George Melhuish, for a place in the semi-finals.

At the top of the draw, Danny Bisson and Tom Pattimore carried on their form from Sunday’s qualifier to live up to their billing as No. 1 seeds with a 5 & 4 victory over Jason Savident and Mich Davy.

The L’Ancresse pair now face an intriguing quarter-final against Daniel Griggs and Lindsay Boyd, who were too strong for young Conor McKenna and Matt Tullier yesterday.

It was a similar story when juniors Lewis Marley and Jayden Tucknott took on defending champion Jeremy Nicolle and his new partner CJ Elmy.

The latter combination took control from a relatively early stage and by the time they walked off the 12th green Nicolle and Elmy were 5 up. The match last just a couple more holes.

In the quarter-finals they will meet Dave Robinson and Andy Eggo, who came through one of the closer matches of the night against Graeme Falla and Neil Tanguy in 17 holes.

There was much easier progress for the most-established pairing in the draw as regular Island duo Steve Mahy and Jamie Blondel cruised through to the last eight needing only 13 holes to see off Rory McKenna and Harrison Brown.

Mahy and Blondel will now face the winners of the best of the opening night’s matches in Tom Le Huray and Wayne Moore.

It was Le Huray’s play-off victory on Sunday afternoon that earned his team a shot at second seeds Roland Mills and Arthur Evans, with the South African pair edging ahead early on and reaching the 12th hole 2 up.

However, Le Huray and Moore made a good up-and-down on that par three to halve the deficit and when Le Huray came up with the shot of the night from the left rough on the 15th to set up a brilliant birdie, it brought them back to all square.

The next was halved in fours, then another fine approach from the 2020 Island champion led to a par on 17 that was enough to win the hole and his tee shot to the heart of the 18th green ensured they progressed.
