Le Tissier back on international duty
MAYA LE TISSIER is back with the England Under-23 Women this week, with their coach urging them to follow in the footsteps of the European Championship-winning seniors.
The Guernsey defender, who joined Manchester United from Brighton & Hove Albion this summer, is in the 24-strong Young Lionesses squad who will be in action away to Norway on Friday, having gathered on Monday for a week-long camp.
‘I am looking forward to getting the squad together at the start of what will be another exciting season,’ said England U23 coach Mo Marley.
‘These young players should all be encouraged by what the seniors achieved. They have the perfect example to follow of what is possible in an England shirt.
‘They can also see that some players who were with us recently are now in the senior set-up and getting the chance to show what they are all about. Every minute of experience in international football is valuable and I am sure the players will be hungry to grab the opportunity.’
Norway have a strong pedigree in development team football, underlined by their under-19s finishing runners-up at the 2022 WU19 Euro last month.
Friday’s match will take place at the Mellos Stadion in Moss.
Le Tissier was involved with the England U23s throughout last season when they had a strong and challenging programme, including a double-header with France in February, which ended with a 1-1 draw following a 3-2 defeat, and most recently a 3-0 victory and 0-0 draw against the Netherlands in April.
Last weekend, the former Guernsey Star Trophy player had a pivotal role in the goal that gave Manchester United a 1-0 win over Everton in their pre-season friendly at Carrington, hitting a fantastic cross-field pass to find Martha Thomas, who laid the ball off for Lucia Garcia to score.
NORTHERNERS coach Jose Alvarez has told the latest Guernsey Press Football Podcast that Brandon Wallace’s spectacular equaliser in their 3-1 win over St Martin’s in the FNB Priaulx League came just at the right time for his side before they went on to claim a ‘totally deserved’ result.
‘We know that he can do that. That’s why we put him on the right, to come in and we know he has that in his armoury,’ said Alvarez. ‘He normally does that at training, but he did it when it really matters and I am so happy for him because people don’t see the work he puts in behind the scenes. I am absolutely delighted for him.’
