WATCH: Guernsey regain Challenge Trophy at L'Ancresse
The Challenge Trophy is back in Guernsey hands.
The hosts fought back from having lost the opening foursomes session 3.5-1.5 to Jersey on Saturday morning at L’Ancresse to level things at 5-5 after that afternoon’s fourballs.
They carried that momentum into yesterday morning’s concluding singles and won seven-and-a-half points out of 10 to regain the silverware thanks to a 12.5-7.5 victory.
Guernsey captain Dave Jeffery hailed ‘some fantastic performances’ from his side over the weekend.
‘If Jersey had got to six, six-and-a-half points on Saturday evening, it’s pretty much done,’ he said of the crucial fightback in the fourballs.
‘As the holders, they only needed 10 points to retain the trophy, so to try and defend three-and-a-half points in the singles would have been a very tough ask, but at 5-5 it’s all to play for.’
On a personal note, Jeffery added with a smile that this victory ‘helps’ to make up for the disappointment of the senior inter-insular defeat seven days earlier.
‘Last week was disappointing, but a different weekend and a different result so, yeah, I’m very pleased,’ he said.
‘I wasn’t sure if I’d be keeping the job after last week, but hopefully now I’ll be taking them to La Moye next year.’
Jersey captain Ian Daly said that while he and his team were ‘pig sick’ to lose, huge credit had to go to the Guernsey team.
‘At lunchtime [on Saturday] I was very happy to have a two-point lead after the foursomes, where historically we are not that good for some reason, but I think they carried that momentum which they gained in the fourballs into the singles and we’ve no complaints.
‘I watched some high quality golf out there by 20 guys trying their hearts out, but full credit to Guernsey, they did well and truly deserve it this weekend.’
At Grouville, Jersey won the women’s inter-insular convincingly 16-4.
