Maya Le Tissier memorably made her debut for the Lionesses last night and played the full 90 minutes for Sarina Wiegman’s European champions in their 1-1 draw against Norway at the Pinatar Arena in Murcia, Spain.

The 20-year-old Sarnian started at right-back and was called upon to make an important challenge when Emilie Haavi was sent clear on a Norway counter-attack in just the third minute after Millie Bright was dispossessed, Le Tissier doing well to put pressure on the attacker and narrowing the angle with England goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck making the save.

Rachel Daly, who had started at right-back against Japan last Friday before being moved up front for the majority of this contest, gave England the lead in the 32nd minute, nodding home Chloe Kelly’s pinpoint cross and they remained 1-0 up until half-time.

Wiegman rung the changes in the second half, but Le Tissier played the whole 90 minutes and looked assured as she moved to centre-back for the last half-an-hour once Bright and Alex Greenwood were given a rest against a Norway side who finished with 10 players after Anja Sonstevold picked up two yellow cards.

However, they came up with an equaliser after the sending off as Frida Maanum capitalised on a Roebuck mistake to score in the 80th minute.

England applied late pressure but were unable to force a winner, although the result saw Wiegman extend her unbeaten run as manager to 26 matches.

‘This week three players made their debuts, lots of players got minutes ... we take a lot from this and the overall year,’ she said.
