No Sparks fly as GFC are made to wait

GUERNSEY FC have to wait for their first game of 2023 after South Park were left grounded in England on bank holiday Monday.

The Aurigny jet experienced technical problems in the morning, which led to ongoing delays and would have affected the Sparks’ ability to get home on the day so the game was postponed and will be rearranged for a later date.

It is another stroke of bad luck for the Green Lions who, after their recent availability crisis, had been able to name a squad of 17 for the game including the return of Jacob Fallaize and Tom Martin as well as Sam Murray, Matt Loaring and Dave Merris.

Without the opportunity to pick up any points, GFC dropped to the bottom of the Isthmian South Central as Merstham rose above them on goal difference by holding second-placed Walton & Hersham to a 3-3 draw.

The sides in 17th and 18th places – Sutton Common Rovers and Tooting & Mitcham United – suffered defeats at Leatherhead (4-3) and Chipstead (2-0) respectively.

There was a shock at the top of the table as leaders Northwood were thumped 4-1 at home by 10th-placed Hanworth Villa.

GFC’s next home game will be this coming Sunday against Thatcham Town, who were beaten 2-0 by Basingstoke Town yesterday.
