Indies buzzing for Spanish adventure
Independents aim to conquer Europe when they head to Spain at the end of the month.
Having become Guernsey Evening League champions for the first time in the club’s history last season, their reward was to be the island’s representatives in the 2023 European Cricket League at the Cartama Oval in Malaga and Indies have been drawn in Group A alongside Hornchurch of England, Darmstadt from Germany, Estonia’s Tallinn Stallions and Byron of Greece.
The winners of the group, which will take place from 27 February to 1 March, will progress to championship week from 20-24 March.
‘We’re absolutely buzzing,’ said Indies all-rounder Will Peatfield.
‘We have been training for about a month now. T10 is massively different to anything we’ve played before, but we will adapt as best we can by being as disciplined as we can with the ball and whack it as far as we can with the bat.’
Watch: Indies edged 2021 champions Griffins to land their first Rozel Shield last summer
With the exception of the unavailable Zak Damarell, Indies will be fielding a strong squad led by captain Nathan Le Tissier and including Island players such as the Nightingale brothers and the Stokes brothers as well as Peatfield.
‘We are there to win. It can be perceived as a jolly in the sun in February, but we want to go out there and win every game we play to become the first Guernsey team to win it – we are taking it mega seriously.
‘There are so many unknowns for us, but Griffins found out when they went last year that you have got to be wary of every team so we are not taking any games for granted.
‘T10 is such a short game that we’ve got to make sure we are switched on for every ball,’ Peatfield added.
