Alongside this major milestone, organisers have unveiled a packed programme of 205 events over the six days of competition.

The Games begin in style on Saturday 8 July with the opening ceremony along the Town seafront.

Competition starts the following morning and concludes with a ‘fantastic Friday’ featuring the triathlon relay, cycling criterium and half marathon on the seafront, plus several other major finals.

Games director Julia Bowditch highlighted that all entry is free for spectators and there will be medal moments every day.

‘The release of the programme shows just how much will be happening in Guernsey during the Games week,’ she said.

There are 522 golds to be won, including a likely spectator highlight in Tuesday evening’s 400m hurdles final when Commonwealths medallist Alastair Chalmers runs in front of a home crowd.

‘All sports have really high-standard athletes and our local competitors will be trying their very best for Guernsey,’ said Guernsey Island Games Association chairman Brian Allen.

‘We have the added advantage of home support and no travel. We expect a flurry of medals when the swimming starts because in the pool there are 45 gold medals on the line.

‘Overall, we are looking for a strong home performance.’

• The programme will soon be added to the Guernsey 2023 website.
