Le Flem stars as GFC Women shine on debut
Guernsey FC Women coach Anna Gauvain was ‘buzzing’ after her players secured an away win in their first ever match, beating Corinthian-Casuals 6-1 in the Isthmian League Women’s Cup.
‘We were impressed with how much the girls listened to us,’ she said.
‘What they did on the pitch was exactly what we wanted – to score goals, to be exciting and for the girls to feel success – and they went out all guns blazing. Yes, we got the result but there were a lot more positives to take away than just winning the match.’
Codie Le Flem had the honour of becoming the new side’s first ever scorer and the 18-year-old went on to complete a first-half hat-trick, with Scarlett Kenneally, Emily Pike and Elise Le Lacheur all finding the net in the second half.
Club director Nic Legg described Friday evening’s outcome as ‘absolutely massive – a pinch me moment’, while men’s team manager Tony Vance described the women’s squad as ‘pioneers’.
‘They’ve got a real opportunity – like we had 12 years ago – to take the local game forward and inspire youngsters,’ he said.
The buoyant mood at the club was reflected by the enthusiastic reception several of the women’s players got when presented to the 663 crowd at half-time of Saturday’s men’s match.
However, the Isthmian South Central league game against Ashford Town saw Vance’s charges fall to an eighth successive league defeat, after what he described as ‘a smash and grab’.
‘We were the better team on the pitch and they never looked like scoring,’ he said, following a 1-0 defeat to a last-minute goal.
