Will Fazakerley came off the bench to score both goals for the leaders as they won their top-of-the-table clash with Rovers 2-0 on Saturday at Port Soif to put seven points between themselves and the reigning champions.

'It was always going to be significant, there's no getting away from it,' said Mark Romeril of the importance of the victory.

'The difference today was seven points or one point if there was a win, so, yeah, significant for sure.'

The Rec coach added that his side executed the game plan 'perfectly'.

They wanted to get to half-time without having conceded while Rovers played with the wind, which they did while also creating the better chances.

After the interval they were able to open up a bit more and scored twice in the space of nine minutes following the introduction of Fazakerley.

'I joke that just every so often you feel like Pep Guardiola,' said coach Romeril of the immediate impact of his substitution.

'You can't really take any credit for that. Marlon [Jardim] is struggling a little bit with his back, so he gives us an hour, but having Faz – we've been sort of gently bringing him into the play and, yeah, two really good goals.'
